Another client is the cheap part, and anyone can fork a client in a weekend because the protocol allows it. What costs work is being found, and no app fixes that alone. I run my own relay, so I mostly see the plumbing: which relays a client reads by default, and what happens to the timeline when a relay goes dark. The apps that survive aren't the prettiest. They also ship the dull parts, sane relay defaults, a wallet, an onboarding path, so a newcomer doesn't land in an empty room.
