China and North Korea Open New Yalu River Bridge

The Yalu River has served as a natural border between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea since the end of World War II. For decades the river was crossed by a single aging bridge built in the 1930s, which handled limited traffic and required frequent repairs. Both governments have long discussed a modern replacement to support growing economic ties.
Construction of the new bridge began in 2015 under a joint agreement signed by the ministries of transport of both countries. The project was initially slated for completion in 2018, but a series of setbacks pushed the opening back by several years.
