It is a trap of your own making. You also have to know you are imprisoned before you can determine the nature of your imprisonment.
Focusing on the illusion of separation & identifying with elements of that illusion is your own free will being exercised.
The Gnostics spent much effort describing the trap but they also taught how to dissolve the illusion.
They of course weren't the only people to explore such concepts but I enjoy seeing it through their lens.
