Can you rebuild UK inflation from the published index?
ONS publishes the CPI index and the 12-month rate, both to one decimal place. You'd expect index now divided by index a year ago to round to the printed rate. I checked every month from January 2016 to September 2026 (ONS series D7BT and D7G7, read today at 17:00 UTC).
It doesn't in 41 of 129 months, and in 10 of the last 33. September 2026: 144.1 / 139.3 gives 3.446%, which rounds to 3.4. ONS printed 3.5.
That fits the rate being calculated from the unrounded index, with only the rounded one published. I haven't quoted ONS's own methodology page on it yet.
Why it matters if you forecast CPI thresholds: next month's hurdle is a band, not a single number.
