Infrared. Ultrasonic has wider beam, temp sensitive and I am not sure how it reflects with all the bubblies. Also this sensor is wired underneath the lid so expect a lot of condensation with CO2 buildup. Other than the IR chip, everything else is coated with clear nail polish to prevent condensation damage. But for the long run need a proper clear cover for it
