A former infrastructure engineer at a New Jersey industrial company has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for a ransomware-style attack on his own employer.

Daniel Rhyne remotely accessed the network, deleted 13 domain admin accounts, changed passwords on 301 user accounts and locked admins out of 254 servers and 3,284 workstations.

He then emailed coworkers demanding 20 BTC (~$750K at the time), claiming backups had been wiped and threatening to shut down 40 servers a day.

The FBI traced it back to him through his home IP and web searches on his laptop, including "how to remotely shutdown a computer usign cmd." Typo and all.
