FIPS is good as is, but if you want to explore similar networks with an already existing user base, check cjdns and Yggdrasil.

They should be able to scale better than DHT based meshes, or at least that is what led one of the co-creators of CJDNS into creating Yggdrasil.

Basically the problem was, since cjdns is source routed and relies on a DHT, the routing table would eventually grow to the point that nodes wouldn’t be able to route packets anymore (at least without asking for a bigger/“routing node” for a route), while Yggdrasil (and our nostr friend ) elect a node as the network root and then assign dynamic coordinates based on your position relative to said root, and then nodes try to find the best next hop based on local information (and a worst case scenario route is always guaranteed).

I may have gotten a thing or two wrong so might want to check out https://yggdrasil-network.github.io/

I have a growing suspicion that IPFS isn’t fundamentally wrong, it just has/had severe implementation issues, to the point that I guess some vibecoder could get it working better than whoever is at protocol labs, but they have brand recognition so good luck to whoever attempts taking them down.
