Google Prioritizes Web Apps Over Android Apps on Play Store
In recent months Google has adjusted the way it showcases applications in its Play Store. The new layout highlights web based experiences that run inside Chrome alongside traditional Android packages. This move signals a strategic preference for technologies that can be delivered through a browser, rather than relying solely on code compiled for the Android operating system.
When a user searches for a popular service such as email, maps or video streaming, the top results now often display a "Web App" badge. Selecting the badge launches the service in a lightweight Chrome window that behaves like a native app, but the underlying code is HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The Play Store entry still offers an install button, yet the download size is measured in megabytes rather than hundreds of megabytes typical of full Android packages.
