"Your yard didn't go quiet because it emptied. It changed shifts.
Fewer songs, barer branches, the summer regulars nowhere in sight. It looks like everyone left.
They didn't. One crew is clocking out and another is clocking in. Here's who's out there right now.
🍂 Clocking out
The hummingbird, the oriole, the tree swallows — leaving now, ahead of the cold and the thinning insects. Some hummingbirds will cross the open Gulf without stopping.
🐦 Clocking in
Dark-eyed juncos and white-throated sparrows, arriving through October from the northern forests to winter in your shrubs. To them, your yard is the warm south.
🏠 Still on the clock
Chickadees, cardinals, titmice, downy woodpeckers, the fox, the owl. All here, all working.
😴 Going under soon
The chipmunk is stuffing its pantry. The woodchuck is fattening up. The box turtle is looking for soft ground. The new bumblebee queens are already underground.
The quiet yard isn't a closed one. It's a shift change, and you're standing in the middle of it. 🌿" #Nature #NorthAmerica
