Science Corp implants vision restoring chip in first Stargardt patient

Science Corp announced this week that its vision restoring retinal chip has been surgically placed in a patient with Stargardt disease. The procedure, performed at a leading ophthalmic center, represents the first human implantation of the company’s proprietary device. The patient, a 34 year old individual, will undergo a structured follow up to assess visual improvement and safety outcomes.
Stargardt disease is the most common inherited form of macular degeneration affecting children and young adults. It is caused by mutations in the ABCA4 gene, leading to the accumulation of toxic byproducts in the retina. Over time, central vision deteriorates, making reading, face recognition and driving difficult. According to the National Eye Institute, there is currently no approved therapy that can halt or reverse the disease.
