Endurance sport devices (sport watches, bike computers, sensors, etc) is quite screwed up in terms of software. You forced to use proprietary firmwares and apps to do your workouts and get your training data.
However, there is an example of potentially cool e-ink bike computer. It's not on par with the proprietary solutions, but gives a hope that the situation can be significantly improved and will likely improve in nearest future.
