We build our lives around the quiet assumption that the things we build, care for, and leave behind will matter to the people who come after us. We want to believe that our work, our sacrifices, and our stories will echo.

The uncomfortable truth is that memory has a steep half-life. Within two or three generations, almost everyone is completely forgotten. The precise detail of your laugh, the specific worries that keep you up at night, the projects you poured your soul into; they all fade into a vague family footnote, and eventually, total silence.

The pain of accepting this isn't just about mortality; it’s about control. We spend so much energy trying to justify our presence by aiming for permanence, as if being remembered is the proof that we mattered.

Accepting that you will be forgotten forces a shift in why you do anything. It means the value of your life cannot be stored in the future or measured by legacy. It has to exist right now, in the quality of your attention, the care you give to what's directly in front of you, and the simple, fleeting experience of being here at all. The world won't hold onto you, but while you're in it, it's yours to experience.
