BIS Working Paper: Higher bank deposit rates may slow stablecoin growth, USDC reacts more strongly. Research from Jan 2019-Jun 2025 shows a 1 bp weekly increase in deposit rates correlated with a 3 pp cumulative decrease in stablecoin market cap growth over 10 weeks. This moderates growth, not reduces market cap. USDC showed a more pronounced reaction than USDT. Study notes limitations: doesn't prove reduced bank deposits/lending, and covers only one high-rate cycle. Views are authors', not BIS'.
