For me it was:
-learning 9/11 was an inside job
-learning how race and IQ research had been suppressed in academia (and you would never guess which ethnicity was responsible)
-seeing the bank bailouts and no one going to jail for it even though there were literally millions of counts of black letter fraud in that debacle
All around the same time frame of the latter half of the 2000s
And of course it only got worse from there with the rise of Woke, the New New Left, Obama, etc
I also joined WN forums back in the day and learned more but over time I have realized that they were my first exposure to a dysfunctional crank population that wants only to complain, e.g. the same people who are incels now - mind you there were some very smart people on there as well, and that's why I stayed, but I didn't yet have good mental defenses against the worse sort of person whereas now I would agree with you - don't associate with them, block them,, etc
