What happens to a community’s history when the places that preserve it are destroyed? And how can archives, museums and historical memory survive a war?
Archives in Wartime: The Legacy of Nestor Makhno and the Zaporizhzhia State Archives
13.10.2026, 18.00 | Pariser Platz 4A, 10117 Berlin

On 13 October, we invite you to the Pilecki Institute in Berlin for an evening exploring these questions through the history of Nestor Makhno, the documentary heritage of the Zaporizhzhia region, and the ongoing efforts to protect Ukraine’s cultural heritage amid Russia’s full-scale war.
As in previous events in our Festung Archiv Ukraine series, we will explore both the history of an archival institution and the documents it holds. The event will highlight the Huliaipole Local History Museum’s efforts to safeguard its collections, move objects to safer locations where possible, and document materials at risk. We will also examine the complex and controversial legacy of Nestor Makhno through archival materials connected to Huliaipole, the town with which his history is closely entwined.
Lecture and Discussion with Olha Yadlovska, Director of the State Archives of Zaporizhzhia Region and Dr Tetiana Portnova, historian.
Moderator: Natalia Latecka
The event will be held in Ukrainian with simultaneous translation into English.
Organised by the Pilecki Institute Berlin in cooperation with the Bundesarchiv and the Centre for Historical Research Berlin of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).
The event focuses on Huliaipole, a town in the Zaporizhzhia region of south-eastern Ukraine and the birthplace of Nestor Makhno (1888–1934). An anarchist revolutionary and leader of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the revolutionary and civil wars of 1917–1921, Makhno became one of the most influential and controversial figures of the period. His movement was deeply rooted in the peasant communities of southern Ukraine, and Huliaipole became one of its most important centres.
Makhno’s legacy has been interpreted very differently over time. While Soviet historiography largely portrayed him as a bandit and counter-revolutionary, anarchist movements in Europe came to regard him as an important figure in the history of revolutionary anarchism. More recent approaches have placed greater emphasis on the Ukrainian social and historical context of the Makhnovist movement and its relationship to the peasantry, local self-government and competing forms of political power.
