Great on coming up with your own folk tales! I do that all the time though my culture has thousands of stories to borrow from. Folk tales were not meant to be static, but to be retold and adapted to different situations and peoples. IMHO It is not cultural appropriation if you get inspiration off a Native American (or other culture) folk tale to build your own. Using their clothings, hairstyles, etc, is the problem. But I think folk tales are in essence universal human stories.
