The Unbroken Thread
Of Bitcoin, Nostr, sovereignty, and the dignity of the human person
Before the ledger marked its first,
Before the keys were made,
There lived a longing in the heart
No empire could persuade.
To speak without a master's leave,
To labor and to own,
To carry forth the fruits of toil,
And call one's conscience home.
For kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall,
And towers turn to dust;
The promises of mighty men
Are fragile things to trust.
So from the mathematics came
A ledger none could own;
No king could mint its wealth at will,
No emperor claim its throne.
A chain of blocks, a measured time,
Each witness joined to last;
A record written into stone
Of moments slipping past.
Yet gold alone cannot redeem,
Nor numbers heal the soul;
A ledger cannot teach us love,
Or make the broken whole.
And then across the scattered earth,
A thousand voices stirred;
No single gatekeeper could claim
The ownership of words.
A message signed, a public key,
A voice that bears a name;
Through many relays travels forth,
Though none may own its flame.
For speech is more than passing sound,
And truth more than applause;
The freedom to be heard and judged
Demands its own just laws.
And sovereignty is not the right
To do whatever pleases;
It is the burden freely borne
When fear and fashion cease.
I own the words that I have said,
The choices I have made;
And I must answer for their weight
When fleeting echoes fade.
But deeper still, beneath the code,
Beyond the market's roar,
There lives the hope that what we love
Might not be lost once more.
A father's name, a faithful friend,
A creature dearly missed;
The fragile record of a life
That time cannot dismiss.
No chain can raise the dead to life,
No relay conquer night;
Yet we may guard their memory
And bear their names to light.
For we are more than users here,
More than accounts or trades;
We bear an image not our own
That neither rust nor fades.
And freedom is no final god,
Nor sovereignty the end;
They serve the dignity of souls,
Of neighbor, stranger, friend.
Let markets crash and fashions turn,
Let platforms bloom and die;
The work of keeping faith with truth
Must outlast every lie.
And when our keys have passed away,
Our final notes been read,
May those who follow find a path
Through words and works we've left.
Not monuments to pride or power,
Nor claims that we were great,
But traces of a faithful life
That neither gold nor fame could make.
For Bitcoin marks the passing years,
And Nostr lets voices roam;
But neither is the promised land—
They help us carry home.
And through the noise of fleeting things,
Through loss, through hope, through pain,
The thread of human memory
Is gathered up again.
