pointed out this has a name, the firehose of falsehood, and it's only one tool in a much older kit. There's the big lie, too large for anyone to believe was invented, and the kernel of truth, where a lie hides behind one real fact. Laundering plants a claim somewhere obscure and cites it up the chain until it looks independently sourced.

When criticism lands, you discredit the source, distort the facts, distract, and make caring feel pointless, or you just answer with whataboutism. The subtler tools look like freedom. Reflexive control makes you choose what someone wanted and call it your own idea, controlled opposition keeps dissent in safe lanes, and a limited hangout confesses a small truth to bury a bigger one. In the West, ownership and access to officials do the censor's job for free, and the result is manufactured consent. Rename something and the label wins the argument, and keep people afraid of a permanent enemy and they'll trade freedom for protection.
Modern propaganda has mostly given up on convincing anyone. It works better to flood the room with so many claims, counterclaims and manufactured emergencies that you eventually stop trying to sort them, because sorting has become exhausting and nobody can keep it up forever. A tired mind gives up on asking what's true and settles for whatever feels familiar or belongs to its own side.

That exhaustion is the real win for whoever is running the game, because a person too worn out to reason will hand over the job of deciding to someone else. Protecting your attention is how you keep the ability to think for yourself.
