Both only attack and sting when threatened. You can live in peace close to a wasps nest without problems if you remain calm and respectful.
At my parents place there are flowers that attract several species of bees and there is a wasps nest just above the terrace. So when you sit there you're always within 1-2 meters of both wasps and bees. Never been any problem.
The bees mainly prefer the flowers.
The wasps are sometimes interested what's on your plate. They're highly intelligent and social animals.
Just watch your food and drink before you put it in your mouth.
