Yeah if the intention is to be a desktop client, you should think about utilizing a reasonable screen width... central column for feed, left column for different "functions", right column for "whatever"... That's basically the format of Jumble or Ditto.
One thing I'd really like to see that I have yet to see in a Desktop client yet is Amethyst's feed model, where it's sort of "everything" which is all your follows + your lists + hashtag follows, Just follows and lists, just follows, etc. No other desktop client does that.
