The International Classic Film Market (MIFC), the industry arm of Lyon's Lumière Festival, has announced a dedicated national showcase for Taiwan. This marks the first time a non European country receives a standalone focus at the market, according to the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute. The move signals growing recognition of Taiwan's rich cinematic heritage and its influence on Asian film culture.
At the heart of the Taiwan in Focus program is a brand new 4K restoration of Chen Kun hou's 1987 drama Osmanthus Alley. The film, originally shot on 35 mm, tells the story of a young woman navigating love and family expectations in a small Taiwanese town during the 1970s. The restoration project, completed by the institute's preservation team, brings unprecedented visual clarity while preserving the original sound design.
