Deaf, Mute, and Sick
Knowing what is around you is critical. If you have no means of receiving or transmitting communications then you are isolated. In living soils, it is almost always the case that trees, bushes, shrubs, grasses, and forbs are connected together by fungal networks and they function as critical communications and transport infrastructure. It is the warning system, a "landline" as it were, the underground intelligence layer that lets plants receive information from the world around them and transmit their own signals back into it. The isolated tree is the most vulnerable to attack from pests and disease. Even a fully healthy tree that receives no warning from a fungal network about a pest attack can't mount a defense in time and is therefore far more susceptible to attack.
Now take it one step further: Our farm fields. Filled with homogenized, selectively bred plants in acreages by the millions and relentlessly sprayed with anti-fungals and a host of synthetic chemistries purpose built to kill almost everything they touch both below and above the ground, our farm fields have almost no fungal communications network left. The informational flow is broken, thinned, and chemically suppressed. Our food system is fully reliant on plants made deaf, mute, and sick; very easy prey for insects and disease.
