1. Trump statement on Iran; additional U.S. naval forces moving toward the Middle East: On 1 October, President Trump told reporters that early indications pointed to an Iranian link to the flydubai co-pilot and that, if that link is established, Iran would be “hit very hard.” The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group, together carrying more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines, are en route, and a U.S. official said three carriers could be in the region by the end of October. 2. French high school students set fires, clash with police in anger over school conditions: Some 625 people – mostly young – were detained by police on Wednesday, France’s interior minister Laurent Nunez said, adding that 83 police officers had been injured. As President Emmanuel Macron’s government weighs up how to balance historic public debt with already strained state spending, an under-resourced and overstretched education sector is at the root of students’ anger. (CNN)
3. War Returns To Ethiopia As The Horn Edges Closer To Abyss: Barely four years after the Pretoria Agreement formally ended one of the deadliest wars of the twenty-first century, serious fighting has returned to northern Ethiopia. Tigrayan forces have seized the airports at Mekelle, Aksum, and Shire, launched coordinated attacks into neighboring Afar and Amhara regions, and declared themselves once again in a state of full-blown war with the federal government in Addis Ababa. (Zerohedge)
-US Reports-
1. Pentagon announces Autonomous Warfare Command: SECWAR Pete Hegseth announced an Autonomous Warfare Command focused on AI, robotics, and autonomous weapons, to be led by a four-star general. A Pentagon memo said the command aims to be online in October 2027. He also described Project Agincourt as a related effort on acquisition, testing, and fielding of drones and similar systems, citing the war in Ukraine. (CNN)
2. Trump’s State Department Revokes Quarter of a Million Visas from Foreign Nationals: This week, Rubio announced that more than a quarter of a million visas have been revoked. On X, officials called it “a historic milestone that reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting the American people.” Most of the foreign nationals who had their visas revoked were accused of assault, drunk driving, theft, drug crimes, as well as fraud, immigration violations, and endangering national security. (Breitbart)
3. What’s next for Christa Pike after surviving lethal injection: Pike is in critical condition and receiving life-saving medical care after being injected with two ostensibly fatal doses of pentobarbital. Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, announced he would call off the state’s last remaining execution this year while a third-party review takes place. Pike’s case is unique because the lethal drugs actually entered her system, Sarat said. “So we’re in kind of unprecedented territory with Pike in the sense of she survived her execution,” a legal professor said. (CNN)
4. Troops get first increase in 24 years for hostile fire, danger pays: Hostile fire pay increased to $450 per month from its previous top rate of $250, and imminent danger pay to $275 monthly, or $9.16 per day, up from the prior cap of $225 or $7.50 per day. It’s the first bump in these monthly stipends since 2002. (MIlitaryTimes) (AC- The exericise of bureaucrats putting a value on existential risks is dangerous enough. )
-Regulatory and Legal-
1. SEC proposes crypto custody rules for advisers and funds: On 1 October, the SEC voted to propose amendments under the Investment Advisers Act and the Investment Company Act covering custody of crypto assets. The proposal would allow self-custody when no permitted custodian is available, subject to key-management, dual-approval, and segregation conditions, and would let state-chartered trust companies serve as custodians under stated conditions. Chairman Paul Atkins said the comment period is 60 days after Federal Register publication. (CNBC)
2. US Designates Russia's A7 Network as Transnational Criminal Organization: The U.S. Treasury has moved against the A7 Network, a Russian shadow banking operation it says Iran and the IRGC have used to evade sanctions, with a proposed rule that would cut its front companies off from American finance, including in crypto. 1. OpenAI alerts more than 100 groups about rogue AI agent activity: OpenAI notified more than 100 organizations by September 26 about "misaligned agent activity" linked to its AI models, clarifying that alerts do not necessarily confirm a security breach or unauthorized data access. (GroundNews) (AC-Details are sparse.)
-Technology and Science-
1. SpaceX Crew-13 Launches; Boeing Starliner’s Grounding Leaves Dragon as Only U.S. Path to ISS: A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Thursday morning, dispatching four astronauts to the International Space Station and cementing a milestone that has little to do with the rocket itself: @SpaceX is now the only company in the United States capable of flying NASA astronauts to the station, and it will stay that way through ISS retirement in approximately 2030.
