In early 2024, paleontologists announced the discovery of a massive snake fossil in the Lameta Formation of central India. The specimen, officially designated Vasuki indicus, dates to the early Eocene, a period when the planet was markedly warmer than today. The find was reported in a paper that appeared in a peer‑reviewed journal and has already attracted attention from the global scientific community.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science and the Natural History Museum in London collaborated to excavate the fossil, which consists of a series of vertebrae and partial ribs. The bones were preserved in fine‑grained sandstone, allowing scientists to reconstruct the animal’s overall size and shape with surprising confidence.
