Cambridge Heavy Industries Quietly Advances Desktop Fusion Technology

A desktop fusion device is a small scale system that uses nuclear fusion reactions to generate energy or produce neutrons for scientific use. Unlike traditional fusion reactors that occupy large facilities, a desktop version fits within a laboratory space the size of a small room. The core principle relies on heating a fuel pellet—typically a mixture of deuterium and tritium—to temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius, causing atomic nuclei to merge and release energy.

Laser driven fusion, also known as inertial confinement fusion, uses intense laser pulses to compress the fuel pellet from all directions. The rapid compression creates the pressure and temperature needed for fusion. When the laser energy is delivered in a fraction of a nanosecond, the outer layer of the pellet explodes outward, driving the inner core inward and achieving the required conditions for a brief moment.
