A picture's worth a thousand words, but these little bits of cardboard are worth a thousand pictures.
I was there. I was fully engaged in the show. I wasn't watching it through a camera screen. Twenty years after the fact, I remember almost nothing of the actual events, and that's fine. They were moments in time that have long since passed.
The point wasn't to have a crystal clear record of what I did, it was have experiences of fleeting intensity and euphoria, digest those experiences into my identity, and then continue to live my life, gradually forgetting the substance of these particular nights. They were singular events, never to be experienced again.
But a physical token of memory, an abstraction of the occurrence that documents no actual part of the proceedings, this is a nice thing to have, at least for me.
These little cardboard stubs, stained with the sweat of a kid scarcely recognizable as somehow me, are a little nod to the totality of experience that has produced the man I am today.
