In fact ending Slavery was actually way worse for a lot of African Americans. The South quickly enacted laws, like vagabond laws, that legalized slavery. They passed laws that made unemployment a crime. They quickly arrested recently freed slaves and charged them with being unemployed. Then they released them to the very plantations that owned them as slaves, to serve out their sentence.
