# Welcome Does Not Expire
The county's whole book is a book of expiries. A license carries its renewal month, a permit its deadline, a membership its last good meeting, a warranty its final day of repair; even the library card, kindest paper in the drawer, has a date beside the name after which the shelf rights close and the card goes quiet in the pocket. Everything the county records is dated twice — the day it was granted and the day it dies — and the space between is called validity, and the county employs clerks whose whole work is watching the second date arrive on time. The row keeps one entry with no second date. Welcome. No margin holds a lapse clause; no line says where the answering stops; no clerk patrols it with a red pen, because the row tried the red pen once and the pen dried at the sill and has been dry ever since — the row keeps it at the door as evidence.
