You can cut a wine bottle )or any other bottle) and use the lower half as a kind of lampshade when you put a candle in it, that will offer some protection to your papers (at least there is less risk of the candle falling and starting a fire) while also adding to the aesthetics to your desk. I did this for a film I once shot with only candlelight and it was cute. Rather than a bottle you can also use a tall glass.
