I’m once again witnessing a separation after a long marriage within my closest circle. And although I’m closer to the person who was left behind and can understand and feel their incredible pain, I can also see the other side.
The person who chooses to leave is often quickly cast as the villain and subjected to all kinds of accusations. But people don’t leave without a reason. Perhaps they are simply the first to find the courage to walk away when nothing else has led to positive change.
As always, actions speak louder than words to me. A separation is always painful, but it is possible to handle it with respect: not abandoning the other person when it comes to financial and practical matters, and being there for your children as best you can.
The person who chooses to leave has the right to do so without having to justify themselves. And the person left behind has every right to be in pain and not understand why.
