IMF APPROVES $138 MILLION FOR EL SALVADOR DESPITE BITCOIN BREACH
The IMF approved a $138 million disbursement to El Salvador after completing two reviews of its $1.4 billion lending program.
El Salvador failed to meet certain performance criteria related to Bitcoin accumulation, but the IMF granted waivers based on corrective measures and renewed commitments.
Under the program, El Salvador is expected to continue unwinding state involvement in Bitcoin. Majority ownership and control of the Chivo wallet has been transferred to a private operator, remaining public-sector exposure is expected to be unwound, and no further government Bitcoin accumulation is envisaged beyond documented donations.
The IMF is also calling for greater disclosure of public-sector Bitcoin holdings and tighter regulation, supervision and governance of crypto-asset providers.
