so obviously heat is different throughout India so I'm not sure if you can generalise anything from this, but I worked at Kew Gardens when they held a chilli festival with lots of different varieties of chillis growing. So some of my friends and colleagues decided to have a chilli eating competition eating progressively hotter and hotter chillis, and it kind of became a national honour thing between a girl of Punjabi heritage, a Mexican guy and a Vietnamese girl. And we English spectators who had always thought Indian food was the hottest in the world were very surprised that the Indian girl went out first (the Vietnamese girl won). Obviously sample size of one, and we were just a bunch of idiots in our early twenties goofing around, this wasn't in any way a scientific study.
