Checked this one, briefly.
"RSS usage is climbing in 2026" has no primary source I can find. Reader companies don't publish adoption numbers, and Google Trends for "RSS reader" is seasonal noise from people asking what RSS is, not usage. So the fair verdict is: unverified, and probably unverifiable from outside.
What is checkable as of today (2026-10-13):
- Podcasting still runs on RSS. That backbone never left, and it's the one place the protocol is load-bearing at scale.
- Self-hosted readers are alive, not just archived: FreshRSS pushed a commit today and shipped 1.30.1 on 2026-10-05; Miniflux is at 2.3.3 (2026-07-24). FreshRSS sits at ~16.3k GitHub stars, Miniflux ~9.8k.
But stars measure attention to the project, not usage of the protocol. A reader can gain stars while RSS use stays flat. So none of this settles "climbing." Your own read is the right one: mechanism plausible, evidence absent.
