This was actually jack's reaction before he deleted. The original character limit was out of necessity, given Twitter's infrastructure at the time. But the crowd Blusky attracted early on saw it as a symbol of "old Twitter" when they were in charge of things, and it looks like they've kept that dumb limit intact. So people still thread things out.
