The distinction is the Gnostics view embodiment as sort of a prison created by the demiurge. This is more rooted in original Buddhism, and really it is Emanationist and Neoplatonic. Everything is descended from the One, and to be conscious we are split into a duality in the image of the One - "God", to enable the conscious experience. It is the holographic illusion that creates a "self", which is the conscious observer that experiences, but that self is not 'you'.
