The FBI has arrested a man in Pennsylvania on suspicion of carrying out the hack that stole sensitive personnel data on thousands of FBI employees, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke to The New York Times. They said he is a Canadian citizen and is considered a primary co-conspirator in the intrusion. His name and the charges have not been released.
The FBI’s cyber chief, Brett Leatherman, said this week the breach resulted from a security failure on a platform run by a third party, after a contractor failed to apply a patch that had been issued. Reuters earlier reported the contractor worked for Accenture. The FBI says it removed the contractor and that multiple arrests have been made.
The hacking group claimed last month it took the data from the FBI’s jobs portal. A Times analysis of records the group shared found home addresses, Social Security numbers, sensitive job assignments and family details. The FBI says it is assuming all employees were compromised. The group threatened to expose the data unless the FBI retracted an advisory about it, then backed off.
Leatherman says the group is believed to have breached more than 140 organizations and extorted $70 million since last year. Dutch authorities arrested a 24 year old suspected of affiliation in September, though the group denied knowing him.
