Direct them to the local meetup or grounded, practical resources online. IMO getting bitcoin into as many hands as possible, however they hold it, is the most important part. People with skin in the game will move the needle faster and further than a handful of hardcore's obsessing about rolling dice.

I would skip the whole self-custody thing for onboarding. I'm not obligated to do the work of a bunch of wallet writers and manufacturers who lazily thrust the same compromises and awful standards on us for the last 13 years.
Trying to make everyone a sovereign self-custodian Day One is mission creep. Convert Square merchants. Tell your family and friends about Strike or CashApp. Hairshirt fanaticism is for the monero bros who want to LARP as science fiction characters and ship each other baked goods and shit.

Are we still recommending self-custody to normies, or have we given up? I'm kind of in the "give up" camp.

The first goalpost was guardians were, in your own words, "private from each other" and "can't collude".
They absolutely can collude, and "private from each other" doesnt mean they didn't preliminarily know who each other was in the formation of a federation. It also doesnt mean means they can't discover each other's npubs, which dovetail directly into multiple private messaging protocols over which they CAN coordonate and collude in a manner opaque to the users.
If the goalpost is now "cannot geolocate each other", I never claimed they could.

If every guardian can discover every other guardian's npub via the federation's own consensus metadata (which anyone holding an invite code can read), how can you say that guardians can't discover each other and collude to steal funds?

You are glitching out to the point I cannot understand you. Where is your evidence that a vulnerability was deliberately placed in the code of Bitcoin, reviewable by the entire world, yet never discovered or disclosed?

Yes, I got my vocab wrong and I'll own that, but we're talking about this in context of a literal supply chain attack where a HWW had a circuit installed between the screen and the main board that leaked the private seed over another 2mm SIM circuit.
A permanently offline Thinkpad just isn't going to have that issue.

Oh my. Have you contacted the FBI?
If you had any documented, real evidence that Epstein has somehow established corrupted influence over Bitcoin, you'd be presenting it.
But you don't, so now you have to drop nothingburgers like this and hope that I and every other person back on planet earth are as crazy and conspiracy minded as a children's crusade that followed Luke off a cliff.

@nprofile…gyzc : if you don't know who the gaurdians are, how do you know they don't know each other? Furthermore, how do you know one person isn't Sibyl'ing as multiple guardians? It's not possible you haven't thought about this. You can't possibly be that dumb.

Also, my point is not that you should use a laptop. It's that HWW's don't make it any easier than a laptop, after you learn all the steps and precautions and secrets maintenance you must go through to self-custody the way that experts consider "correct".

2026-10-10 15:03:16 UTC

- reply

Firstly, a laptop sitting inert on a shelf is not a giant advertisement that you own a valuable asset that can't be clawed back if stolen.
When I bought the laptop, my name didn't go on a list attractive to crypto currency thieves shopping the darknet markets.
Laptop hard drives can be encrypted. If you really don't trust LUKS, go ahead, use a seed phrase, keep it offline and treat the laptop like a SeedSigner.
And exfil is literally the last thing any normative person should worry about. They'll get rugged answering a phone call from "Ledger support" long before someone with multi-million dollar equipment physically acquires the device

I really piss some of the local bitcoiners off recommending the BitKey.
Sovereign crackpot LARPers think the only way to bitcoin is by doing everything the hard way.
They advocate for self-custody the hard way.
They educate in a capacity where it looks like they just want to rattle off 4 hours of warmed-over goldbug talking points. Hard way.
They think converting Square merchants to bitcoin is cheating, because clearly, the merchant must first be made a big bayud sovereign mayun who runs BTCPayServer.
This entire culture is absurd.

2026-10-10 14:03:15 UTC

I think it's pretty apparent that hardware wallets and BIP-39 did not make self-custody easier or more secure.
They made it look easy and secure, but the teetering stack of caveats you have to learn (usually the hard way) represent just as much effort as self-custody was before HWW's existed.
You could just as easily have learned to rip the radio guts out of a laptop and make it an offline signer.

Bitcoiners talk in sweeping terms about civilizational shit. They will drone on endlessly about how society is broken because of food or family or architecture or art or whatever some influencer has told them to care about next.
But how many bitcoiners have you seen actually doing something about any of this?
It's annoying. It's mostly a self-congratulatory culture that when, not glazing people that got rich, just complains and waits around to get rich.
