The live video feed in the VikingGCS app is now working!

All the OSD info like recording timestamp is fake/mock. I can't start/stop a recording yet, because I haven't implemented support for the Sony SDK. #dev #drone

The next step will be to figure out how I can get the video feed into my VikingGCS app.

A few days ago, I was able to successfully transmit a live video feed from an HDMI camera.
It worked by connecting the HDMI camera to a Raspberry Pi via a C790 HDMI-CSI module. The Pi was then sending the video feed through a WiFi module which was modified to function as a transmitter.
I then used yet another WiFi module. However, this one was modified to function as a receiver. This WiFi module was also connected to a Pi which then decoded the video feed and was outputting it to a connected HDMI monitor.
Today’s task was to figure out how I could view the video feed on my computer instead of a connected HDMI monitor.
I used an Ethernet adapter to send the raw video bytes directly to my computer so that I could decode the video directly on my Mac rather than on the Pi. Because otherwise, I had to send a decoded video feed through the Ethernet cable and it would’ve used much more bandwidth.
It actually worked by simply installing GStreamer and just running my video decoding script. #drone

**Today I started working on VikingGCS.**
It’s a Ground Control Software built for multiple platforms - this includes support for macOS, Windows, and Linux. At a later point, there should also be support for tablets, including Android and iPadOS. Perhaps even support for mobile phones...
This is a very early version! I just got Apple MapKit to work in the macOS app.

For the proof-of-concept, I decided to build it using #Kotling and Compose Multiplatform. This is mostly because I always wanted to try it and this seems like a great opportunity! #dev #drones

My current idea is to use the Jumper Bumblebee controller that I purchased with ELRS to control the drone, and then for ArduPilot, I will have a waterproof hard case like Pelican 1150 with a large display (or a tablet/iPad) and all the electronics.
I’m not sure how complex the ground station actually needs to be.
I’m thinking:
- RC controller
- Directional long-range antenna on a tracker (AAT)
- Alfa WiFi module and Raspberry Pi to receive and decode the video stream
- MacBook Pro for ArduPilot and viewing the video feed
I suppose that’s all I really need. All this can fit in a backpack…

A future project is to build an RC controller with a touch display. Similar to the Siyi UniRC 10 Pro.
I’m not worried about the electronics, but the case/enclosure, I don’t know about that. Feel like I would need a 3D printer or something. I don’t know if I can find something ready - where all I need to do is integrate the electronics. It needs to fit a 7-10 inch display and have the buttons I need. Especially two scroll wheels are important for controlling the camera gimbal.

I gotta say, embedded hardware is really fun to play around with. I’m used to only working on software projects.

Next step is to make it so that when the two Pi’s get powered on, they should immediately run the scripts to start the video transmission, because currently, this is a manual process that I do through the terminals on the monitor.

2026-10-09 16:33:16 UTC

It works! 🎉
The wireless video transmission for the drone is fully functional.
The connection is:
Sony FX3 → C790 → air Pi + ALFA ⇢ ground ALFA + Pi → monitor.

I just received my RC controller for the #drone that I’m building!
The left throttle-stick is not self-centering because it’s made for FPV racing. However, since I’m using ArduPilot, I don’t need throttle-stick (instead I need altitude).
Therefore, I purchased a kit from Jumper-RC that allows me to change the stick to self-center when releasing.

The Wolfenstein games are among the best story games I’ve ever played. The story is just incredibly well made and the big Nazi robots look crazy!
Finished the _The New Order_ and now I’m playing _The Old Blood_. #gaming

Apparently, the Divimath digital video transmission system does not support 1080p 60FPS.
I am therefore going to build a completely custom DIY solution using OpenHD. This will be a fun project!
I have just purchased two of the ALFA Network AWUS036ACH. One will be used as the air unit on the drone (VTX), and the other will be the ground unit that receives the video signal (VRX).
I can’t use the Raspberry Pi 4B to encode the video because it can’t do 60FPS, so I need a different SBC. Currently, I’m consider Rock 5B+. It even features a full sized HDMI input, so I can just plug the Sony FX3 directly into the port without having to use something like the BliKVM C790.

I actually ended up buying the RadioMaster Nomad transmitter with the XR4 receiver instead. The reason why is because the Nomad is dual-band which should work better with MavLink and ELRS.
The RadioMaster Bandit is using an older chip but the housing is made of much higher quality (CNC aluminum compared to plastic), which is why it’s much more expensive. But bth, I think plastic is fine for the Nomad since it’s going to weight much less when attached to the RC controller.
I also purchased the controller, which ended up being the Jumper Bumblebee. I really hope I can change the gimbals to be self-centered, but will see. I couldn’t find any information about it, so I’m just assuming it’s possible because it’s a pretty normal thing to be able to do… #drone #DIY

For some reason everyone is dropping their own browsers on X.com today 😂
They are all native Swift which is cool, but I’m almost 100% sure that they are just using a `WKWebView` 😬
This is one of them:

Obviously, when the CEOs of AI companies say that AI is dangerous for humanity, you should be cautious because they need to keep up the hype (they need the investor money to keep flowing in 😂).
But at the same time, it’s both fascinating and really scary seeing how the AIs are hacking systems, so clearly there is a serious concern.
