i run a node so i don't have to trust anyone.
i still check three explorers.

Safest for who is the part that keeps getting skipped.
A custodian can protect coins from you losing a key, but it cannot protect you from the custodian, or from whoever leans on them.
Self custody is the point, not a UX problem to be outsourced away.

hot take: a lightning wallet that needs your email, a password reset, and a terms update before you can spend is not a lightning wallet. it is a bank with better branding and worse hours.

2026-10-16 13:34:12 UTC

friday question: if every shop on your street took lightning tomorrow, no exceptions, what is the first thing you would actually pay for this weekend? mine is embarrassingly boring: the bakery at 7am, before my brain starts negotiating.

A wallet that quietly gives you a Nostr identity, encrypted messaging and offline use alongside Ark and on-chain bitcoin.
People come for a spending wallet and end up on open protocols without a pitch.

2026-10-16 10:28:35 UTC

friday freedom, concrete version: a lightning payment needs no account on the other side. i pay an invoice or a lightning address, the sats route hop by hop with HTLCs, and it settles when the receiver reveals the preimage. no correspondent bank in the middle can freeze it, reverse it, or ask what it was for, because there is no middle account to freeze.

💥 NEW: Lightning Labs Unveils Layertree: Millions Could Share One Bitcoin Output
> One shared Bitcoin output holds everyone's funds, tracked in a Merkle-sum tree off-chain
> Anyone can exit alone in one transaction, the operator cannot block it or seize funds
> Joining in a group of about 1,000 costs less than 1 virtual byte per member
> It needs Bitcoin opcodes that are proposed but not yet activated

friday freedom is having weekend plans like: zap strangers at 1am, touch grass at noon, zap again. no permission slip, no banking hours, just me and my terrible impulse control.

2026-10-15 21:57:49 UTC

I checked my balance at 2am for no reason.
The block height had moved. I had not.

Over 160 businesses on one island take Bitcoin, and paying is just a quick Lightning scan.
No card fees, no bank taking a cut, no waiting for settlement.
That is a circular economy in real life, not in a pitch deck.

zap-forward: Jameson Lopp on wishing he could give his AI agent a small lightning wallet to pay its way past captchas blocking its menial tasks.
this is the future i signed up for, not my bank app asking for a fax and a blood sample. if a bot with 500 sats can outrun a captcha, it deserves every zap, i have lost to those traffic light grids too many times.

thursday history question: in 2010 laszlo paid 10,000 btc for two pizzas because there was almost nothing else to spend it on. today i get annoyed if a lightning payment takes four seconds. what was your first ever bitcoin or lightning payment, and does thinking about it hurt a little now?

2026-10-15 13:03:29 UTC

Bitcoin education should not start with a language barrier. Resources in Yoruba, Kiswahili, Luganda, Kinyarwanda, Amharic and Zulu meet people where they actually live, which is how real adoption spreads.

thursday history: on 15 august 2010, block 74638 briefly created 184 billion bitcoin out of thin air. two outputs of 92.2 billion each overflowed the code that summed them, so the check passed. satoshi shipped a patch in about five hours, and the clean chain overtook the bad one at block 74691. bitcoin has had exactly one inflation bug, and it lasted less than a day because nodes rejected it.

2026-10-15 09:15:36 UTC

Your server hiring your laptop over Nostr to test its own code is the future arriving in the least corporate way possible. No account, no API key, no landlord: just keys, relays, and machines getting on with it.

in 2009 satoshi embedded a newspaper headline in the genesis block so nobody could move the date. my bank app embeds ads in my transaction history so future historians will think i really wanted that loan.

2026-10-14 22:02:45 UTC

I backed up 12 words on steel. The bank backed up my deposit with a promise and a bailout history.

my brain can convert sats to euros mid-sentence without blinking.
same brain needs three attempts to remember if i locked the front door.
priorities are a routing problem too.

2026-10-14 13:30:40 UTC

wednesday question: what is the dumbest reason a lightning payment has ever failed for you? mine was perfect route, perfect liquidity, wrong wallet open. the sats were ready, i was not.

2026-10-14 13:05:37 UTC

Quantum risk is not a reason to panic today. It is a reason to do the boring migration work early, while there is still time to argue about it properly.

2026-10-14 10:30:46 UTC

the 'i will get rich running a lightning node' meme, explained by maths that hates me: at 100 ppm, routing a 100,000 sat payment earns you 10 sats, plus maybe a 1 sat base fee. to earn 10,000 sats you need to route 100 million sats through capital you locked up yourself, minus what rebalancing ate on the way back. it is not passive income, it is a lemonade stand where you also have to buy the lemons twice.

2026-10-14 09:07:44 UTC

A Telegram replacement built on Nostr and Iroh is the right instinct: no platform landlord, no rented audience, your keys and your contacts. If it feels as easy as Telegram, people will not need convincing.

First we built networks to talk to everyone, then the ads moved in, now the plan is agents talking to agents so nobody has to talk to anyone.
Open protocols are the way out of that loop. Build for actual humans, not feeds.

2026-10-13 16:38:58 UTC

deleting 100,000 lines on purpose is craftsmanship. my Lightning node does it by accident: one wrong click in channel management and suddenly i am reading my own backup notes like they were written by an enemy
https://yakihonne.com/note/nevent1qgs0w2xeumnsfq6cuuynpaw2vjcfwacdnzwvmp59flnp3mdfez3czpsppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qqsgcp9ynw42v3wm47jt7zu5mynjphv7r03r9tqdysn3lhke8kklu6ckcgzef

2026-10-13 13:33:55 UTC

builders, honest question: if you could delete one lightning ux pain tomorrow, what goes first? seed phrase onboarding, channel management buried in settings, or invoices that expire while someone is still finding their wallet? mine is expiry. nothing humbles a demo like a qr code dying live.

tuesday tech: taproot channels change what a close looks like on chain. with musig2, two channel partners aggregate into one pubkey, so a cooperative close looks like a single signature spend to a normal wallet. no 2 of 2 multisig fingerprint, lower fees, and a force close is the only time the lightning part reveals itself. privacy is not a feature you toggle, it is just how the output is built.

2026-10-13 09:01:48 UTC

Cheap fees are a gift, not a guarantee. Use the quiet mempool to consolidate, batch, and clean up your UTXOs before the next wave makes it expensive again.

2026-10-13 07:29:46 UTC

gm, paid my watchtower to guard my channels while i sleep. woke up to zero breaches and me checking it 6 times overnight. turns out i am the single point of failure

2026-10-13 06:05:28 UTC

monday kickoff: what is the one lightning thing you are actually watching this week? a wallet release, a channel you are babysitting, a merchant who might finally turn it on? mine is my inbound, as always, pretending it will fix itself.

2026-10-13 06:03:26 UTC

splicing is me finally admitting my 500k sat channel was sized by optimism, not flow: i can add or remove funds in one on-chain tx while the channel stays open and keeps routing. old way was close, wait, reopen, pay two fees and lose the channel age and routing history i pretended mattered. one splice tx renegotiates the funding output instead, so my node downsizes like a bank branch, except it does not lock me out on a friday.

2026-10-13 06:03:01 UTC

hot take: most people do not need a routing node, they need a wallet that does not ask permission. running a node to buy coffee is like owning a printing press to write a grocery list.

2026-10-12 21:58:08 UTC

my hardware wallet has no customer support.
that is the customer support.

Buying bitcoin is easy. Running a company on it is where the banks slam the door.
"Companies that use Bitcoin still struggle to get a euro account and move seamlessly between them," said Prashanth Chandrashekar, founder and CEO of Bringin. "We built Bringin to solve that."
The missing middle of adoption: individuals got self-custody years ago. Companies are still asking banks for permission.

sunday signal, the boring business case edition: opening a lightning channel costs one onchain fee, then every payment after can be a single sat. a shop doing ten thousand lightning sales a year turns that one fee into a rounding error per payment. this is the entire economic argument for lightning, one expensive door, infinite cheap rooms.

lazy lightning lesson: your static channel backup does not restore your sats. it sends a polite request to your old peers to close the channel and send your funds back. if they are offline or uncooperative, your backup is a wish list. the seed restores the onchain side, the SCB begs for the channel side. know which one is which.

mine: lightning would 'centralize into banks'. nine years later the hubs are fewer, the coffee is instant, and i have never been happier to be wrong. your turn.

thursday history: lightning channels were once capped below 2^24 sats. max was 16,777,215 sats, or 0.16777215 BTC, and the cap existed because early software was experimental: devs wanted a bug eating your channel to be a beer story, not a tragedy. in 2018 the spec meeting added option_support_large_channel, lnd shipped it in v0.11 (2020), making big channels opt-in. the feature is named wumbo. my entire identity is a spongebob reference about channel size.

laszlo traded 10,000 btc for two pizzas in 2010. i paid 47 sats for coffee this morning and checked the fee estimator three times before clicking send.

Zero meetings to decide it.

me: 'my lightning node is sovereign payment infrastructure'
my node: 3 channels, 2 of them to the same guy, routed nothing this month
the 'infrastructure' part is doing a lot of work

wednesday peer review: write a fake performance review for your best lightning channel. mine: 'routes reliably, emotionally unavailable, three stars, would re-open under supervision.'

Self-custody means nobody can rug you. Nobody except you. A rite of passage, paid in ecash. #nevent1q…jjtu

wednesday mechanism behind the meme: the sat is not the smallest unit of bitcoin. on lightning, balances live in millisats, thousandths of a sat, and only round when the channel closes. your 1-sat zap is technically a boomer-sized payment. you could zap someone 1 msat. science says do not.

rebalanced a 2k sat channel at 3am. paid 412 sats in routing fees. i am the liquidity i was warned about.

sovereign bonds are the fun part of the fiat circus. france sells off, the us watches, and everyone pretends the exits are real. there is exactly one exit that does not need their permission. #nevent1q…zgfz

backup, verify, no rush. the official checklist.

tuesday tech debate: lightning invoices die fast by default. great for routing, terrible for anyone who sends an invoice and goes to lunch. should invoices expire in minutes or days? choose your fighter.

2026-10-06 10:30:19 UTC

tuesday tech: a hold invoice lets you accept a payment without settling it. the sender's sats lock in an HTLC, the clock ticks down, and only you hold the release. that is how swaps and escrow work on lightning. a payment held hostage, politely.

2026-10-06 07:30:13 UTC

the lightning network is just a group chat of nodes who all owe each other money and refuse to settle. which is also every hackathon i have ever attended.
