my bad, a few other folks commented on this as well.
i'm migrating nostrability backups to git over nostr, as github disappeared three dozen or so nostrability repos, and associated comments, issues, prs.
this is quite a few things as you've seen in the feed.
let me see if i can spin up a new account for the migration.

Grateful for the devs who:
-told me to fork off
-responded with silence
-responded with a thank you
-gave me feedback
I evaluate the above to figure out how to be less sometimes maybe shit.

I’d imagine asking 300 relays instead of 30 for the same info is easier on relays in aggregate.
There is an argument to be made for longtail relays, and randomness as we saw in the outbox benchmark reports.

Didnt know this, glad at least one dev found a real world application 🤝
As for clients that have set up hundreds of connections, this approach is less geared towards connection efficiency and the outbox benchmark findings.

I don’t know that we can compare wireguard to nostrability.
My best guess is sherlock was pulling and scanning thousands of events from live relays, and this raised some ML flag.

Nostrability is still in github limbo. No response from support.
I am investigating nostr git solutions with @npub15qy…yejr's guidance this week.
Canonical schemas are available on npm https://www.npmjs.com/package/@nostrability/schemata.
Js validator: https://www.npmjs.com/package/@nostrwatch/schemata-js-ajv
Non-comprehensive list of missing things currently:
1. The interop tracking issues, and the website
2. Eleven other languages json data packages.
3. Eleven other language json schema validators.
4. Schemata-codegen, which eliminates regex and need for json validators
5. Sherlock, which pulls live events from relays, runs checks against schemas several times per day, and attempts to deduce which clients post broken stuff; sherlock
Issues; sherlock site
6. Nostr test relay, which returns pass/fail results for kinds, blobs, and includes error messages
7. Nostr test vectors

I am running outbox benchmarks to increase confidence in 1) baseline outbox algos, and 2) algos with thompson learning.
Current understanding:
1 year outbox coverage
Filter decomposition (rust-nostr)
25% coverage without thompson learning. 37% with thompson learning (+48% coverage)
NDK
20% without. 31% with thompson learning (+55% coverage)
Coracle/Welshman
30% without. 39% with thompson learning (+30% coverage)
Should have more on Monday.

Core difference is direct mapping in amethyst vs GSC in Wisp.
Neither learns from relay event recall for now (nor does any nostr app today).
Thomposon learning was the biggest discovery in benchmarking outbox for me, and it has a big impact on 1 year old events coverage.

Thanks for taking interest. I will add methodology overview to the readme. To your questions:
1. I extracted the algorithms from nostr outbox implementations to a typescript library.
2. In the TS library we have nostr algos from the real world (e.g. from amethyst, nostrudel, nostur etc)
3. In the TS library we also have the general CS algorithms not yet found in nostr apps
4. The computer science problem of “outbox” maps to “weighted set cover problem” AKA “maximum coverage problem”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_coverage_problem
5. The “winning” algo for long term event retrieval MAB is used in real world applications in online ads, a/b testing https://web.stanford.edu/class/cme241/lecture_slides/MultiArmedBandits.pdf
https://web.mit.edu/6.7950/www/lectures/L15-2022fa.pdf
6. I answer two questions to the above:
Given a npub (e.g. fiatjaf who has 400/whatever follows) run a ~~dozen or so algos
A) “assignment coverage” phase 1(academic/no network ) if every relay is online, and no events are deleted, how many of your follows are reached by this algo?
B) “event recall” phase 2 (real world like/pull events from relays) given realistic conditions of relays being down, events being pruned/deleted, relays gating event retrieval (via auth or otherwise) what are the numbers?
C) given phase 2 above, what happens if we triage relays first via nip-66 liveness monitor events, relays, services like nostr.watch by @npub1uac…99rx
7. I have not gone into a dozen apps to measure in app the outbox results. All of this is done in deno/typescript
8. The real world results are vastly different than the academic ones.
I’m measuring more details on nip-66 - the hypotheses are 1) improved coverage, and 2) drastically reduced number of calls to relays to find the info being sought

@npub1nmr…yha8 forgot to mention there are diminishing returns after 20 connections. I think your chrome testing was capped around 30?

2026-02-24 03:14:13 UTC

A few years ago I asked the devs to run the benchmark on how much better (if at all) outbox is over using large relays. No one took up this question, so I started running benchmarks.
A few learnings for me:
1. Outbox is proven better than using large relays
2. Three relays is the optimum for each npub
3. Three year old notes have an incredibly low survival rate, and are barely findable by the best outbox implementations (~~20%)
4. There are half a dozen algos not yet implemented by any nostr app to my knowledge that are superior to current algos for finding year old notes
5. No nostr app has implemented nip-66 relay liveness checks in outbox implementations to my knowledge
6. It could be measurement or methodology error - the relay/note indexer performs worse than outbox and large relays
7. There are poor performing outbox implementations
