Monero: Because it pays to be private and free.

Distro hopping is underrated. If you're broke, nothing feels like a fresh new machine than flashing your main drive without backup with a new distro you have no idea how to use, then misconfigure it, and do it all over again until you learn the hard way.

definitely just buy an original second hand or from a shop. buying pre-flashed devices is risky unless from a reputable provider specializing in privacy devices [not likely].

GM Thought I would share a new format my AI agent has been doing each week for me to keep up with the Monero system. Let me know in the thread any suggestions, happy to add to it but keep it short. Hope anyone find it as useful as I do:
⚡️ Monero Monday Digest — Oct 12, 2026
🛠 Dev & Releases
• Haveno v1.10.0 — decentralized exchange app, bugfixes (RetoSwap now serves it, was 1.8.0)
• monero-java v0.8.62 + monero-ts v0.11.20 — libraries for building XMR apps (woodser)
• Biscuit Wallet 1.1.1 — mobile XMR wallet, added ETH/USDT/USDC
• Monero Core 0.18.5.3 — reference node software, unchanged
🗳 CCS [Go fund the devs today: tinyurl.com/2y5lkmbr]
• jpk68 — 3 months full-time core dev, needs funding
🌐 Network Updates
• Latam community launched a zero-log node + Tor onion — grassroots LatAm adoption: tinyurl.com/27axx7tm
• GhostSwap — New swap service added to ecosystem (DYOR): tinyurl.com/2cmvpltv
• spirobel's explainer — wallet sync, now & next: tinyurl.com/2dhpzkyd
⚡️ Run your own pruned node:
- Via GUI > Start Node
- Download Monerod and ./monerod on CLI
docs.getmonero.org/running-node/
⛏️ Mining
• Hashrate ~6.01 GH/s — security steady
• Top pool 32.8% (+0.8pp WoW) — drifting toward concentration
• P2Pool 7.7% — decentralized mining, growing
⚡️ Mine on P2Pool today via gupax.io
🏛 Footnote: Regulation [Nobody one cares]
• EU AMLR Art. 79: Jul 2027 — exchanges must drop privacy coins & anonymous accounts; self-custody stays legal
• Germany: 6 of 8 major exchanges delisted XMR; other 2 closed to Germans: tinyurl.com/25vdnp28
• DEXs, swaps & P2P fill the gap — the proof of concept
• P2P fungible cash shrugs.
Stay Sovereign. Stay Private.

What's the correct way to setup your own Tor node? The only thing I ever setup locally as a non-techie was a full monero node via CLI. I read recently you have to choose if you want to be start mid or exit relay. Mid to support network and exit to control your own exit node. But doesn't it make you liable if someone is accessing illegal stuff and exiting through your node? Also is a raspberry pi recommended over a vps? Thanks

A low budget popular choice is a "Pi-hole" raspberry pi. If you search by name you will find the github as a top result.

Find it crazy how Edward Snowden doesn't admit publicly that Monero is the go-to private digital cash. I am sure he is smart enough to own some Monero, nowadays he's just a poster boy for mainstream 'approved privacy' & TED talks.

As a new Linux user (5 years exp on different distros), I think non-linux users need to realize that they have ZERO oversight on what they are downloading/installing on their personal spy devices.
Then they get pwned and have ZERO clue why/how it happened and what to do about it.
ZorinOS = just works
Fedora = just works
Mint = just works

As a non technical person I can testify to the compound effect of pursuing privacy [different journeys but the effect is the same]:
> may start with WANTING to go through and uncheck every box of 'cookie settings' just because
> stop giving away your real info to any person/company
> delete all social platforms except Nostr
> you ditch gmail for a more 'private' service > you realized email hasnt changed since 1995 and become an early adopter of pre-lokinet Session
> realize all shitcoins are traceable as fuck including Bitcoin and Ztrash
> start learning Monero like it's DAY ONE at cypherpunk school
> throw away all devices that are not Linux or GrapheneOS
> encrypt everything at rest
> upgrade to custom firmware [coreboot]
> disable wifi [physically or bios] and use a removable adaptor and ethernet at home
> faraday pouches and sleeves on main travel gear
> strict use of FOSS apps in personal and professional life
> onboard or force others to use the same apps as you
> pay for VPN, data esim and parallel markets with XMR or cash
> ereader shelf becomes 'Extreme Privacy', 'Permanent Record', 'Art of Deception' among others
> sit facing away from CCTV in public places, always aware of surroundings
> secure tax residencies in 2 other countries with offshore bank accounts
> only use PO Boxes for deliveries
> build your own surveillance detection devices
> start learning reticulum mesh networking and radio comms
Low threat model but learning this shit is addictive asf. Feel free to keep the thread going with your journey
