Correct it’s not easy.
There’s some 3rd party multisig solutions that make sense, i just don’t want to pay or be kyc’d so im exploring safe options.
A laptop running core doesn’t sound more complex than a coldcard. As far as a seedsigner, im thinking ill build my own. The video I just watched was not terrifying at all. Like 4 parts.
Ill buy the case online from someone

He wasn’t pimping his own service, he was pointing out that using bitcoin core on an old laptop adds some complexity but eliminates most of the attack surface we’ve seen so far.

Not here, but the algos feed off negativity and people gobble that shit up for whatever reason they like drama.
“Algorithms prioritize engagement (watch time, comments, shares, rewatches) over positive or negative sentiment. Outrage, conflict, and drama reliably produce stronger reactions—people pause to argue, rewatch to fact-check, and share to dunk on someone—which the systems interpret as “this content is important.” Negative engagement is often more potent than praise. “

Supply chain attacks will only become more sophisticated as BTC becomes more scarce.
Buy an older laptop without (or remove) Wifi capacity and run bitcoin Core as a Cold wallet.
There’s some very simple HTML/JavaScript tools that convert physical dice rolls into Bitcoin BIP-39 seed phrases.
All offline and air gapped.
Ian Coleman BIP39 is the OG but there are others you can search up (entropylab just came out with an interesting option)

I posted this over there too but the more I’ve thought about this the less i trust hardware wallets.
Nation states getting involved make supply chain attacks (think Israeli pagers) a certainty as BTC becomes mainstream.
Here’s the solution:
Jack Mallers Show, episode “How Bitcoin Custody Works & Breaking Down The Coldcard Incident” (about 2 hours 15 minutes, published August 4, 2026).
• YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU1nJ4b6Hro
• Chapter “Offline Bitcoin Core as Cold Storage” starts at 1:17:44.
• Around 1:17:51 he says that if you mainly want to store bitcoin and rarely move it, you could buy a laptop, run Bitcoin Core, and keep the laptop offline and never connected to the internet. He frames Core as the most reviewed codebase in the ecosystem and contrasts that with specialized hardware-wallet firmware (in the context of the Coldcard incident).
• Related chapter: “Hardware Wallets Are Not Required” at 1:46:31.
He makes a similar point later on BTC Sessions, episode “Somebody Has To Eat The 40 Trillion Dollar Loss | Jack Mallers” (Mentor Sessions Ep 098, around September 24, 2026). The chapter “Just Use Bitcoin Core for Security” is listed at about 1:02:09.

It’s an ancient Roman legal term
“the exception proves the rule”
Imagine a rule on a sign at the local pool
The sign says “No running”
One day a kid is seen running and someone yells, “no running!” and points at the sign.
That kid is the exception. The fact that someone has to say “that’s not allowed” shows the rule is real for everyone else. If there were no rule, nobody would say anything.

Looking up what “dark skippy” refers to.Dark Skippy is a Bitcoin attack disclosed in 2024 by researchers Lloyd Fournier, Nick Farrow, and Robin Linus. It is not a flaw in one specific hardware wallet. It is a way a signing device already running malicious firmware can leak a wallet’s seed through normal transaction signatures.
Previously, similar “nonce exfiltration” ideas were thought to need dozens of signatures. Dark Skippy shows a full 12-word seed can be recovered from as few as two signatures (which can come from a single transaction).
### How it works
Bitcoin signatures (ECDSA or Schnorr) use a secret random nonce. Honest firmware picks a high-entropy nonce. Malicious firmware instead embeds chunks of the seed into low-entropy nonces, then signs as usual.
Those signatures are broadcast and end up on the blockchain. An attacker scans for them, recovers the weak nonces from the public nonce points with something like Pollard’s kangaroo algorithm, and reconstructs the seed. The device does not need to store the seed afterward, so “stateless” signers are not protected either. A BIP39 passphrase does not stop it, because the attack can target the master key material used in signing.
It only works if the device is already compromised—tampered hardware, a supply-chain issue, or a fraudulent firmware update. Official firmware that generates proper random nonces is not vulnerable by this method. The researchers said they had not seen it used in the wild as of the 2024 disclosure.
### Practical takeaway
Buy devices from the manufacturer, verify firmware, and treat any unexpected firmware prompt as hostile. Longer-term mitigations discussed by the authors include anti-exfiltration signing protocols and forcing nonces to include randomness chosen by the software wallet, which makes this style of embedding impractical.
