🧵 Did you know?
The fierce sea people the Romans feared - the Liburnians
Long before Croatia was Croatia, this stretch of the Adriatic coast, Kvarner, northern Dalmatia, and islands like Krk, Cres, Lošinj, and Rab, belonged to a people so good at seafaring that Rome copied their ships. 🚢
Who were they?
The Liburnians were an Illyrian tribe who dominated the northeastern Adriatic from roughly the 11th century BC onward. Unlike land-based tribes, their whole identity was maritime, coastal hillforts, offshore islands, and a culture built around the sea. Cres and Lošinj sat right in the heart of their territory (the two were even joined as a single island in antiquity, later split by a man-made channel).
A reputation Rome couldn't ignore
Ancient writers described the Liburnians bluntly: expert seafarers, and notorious pirates. Their swift galleys, called liburnae, were so effective that Rome later adopted the exact design for its own navy, a Liburnian warship became the backbone of the Roman imperial fleet.
Living at the same time as the Etruscans
Here's where it connects: the Liburnians and the Etruscans were contemporaries, active in the Adriatic during the very same centuries. While the Etruscans built their power base in central Italy, the Liburnians controlled the sea lanes just across the water, and for a long stretch, it was the Liburnians, not the Etruscans, who actually dominated Adriatic trade routes.
Trade, not conquest
The two peoples never fought a war over territory, instead they traded. Etruscan metalworking techniques and goods flowed into Liburnian territory, visible today in shared craftsmanship and art styles found in Liburnian archaeological sites. Neither side colonized the other; they simply did business.
Squeezed by Etruscan growth anyway
Even without conflict, Etruscan expansion had ripple effects. As Etruscan power grew in the Po Valley, it triggered invasions by the Umbrians and Gauls, which pushed the Liburnians to retreat from trade colonies they'd held on the western Adriatic coast.
Outliving the empire that copied them
Rome eventually conquered Liburnia too, folding it into the province of Illyricum. But the Liburnians' legacy didn't disappear the way Etruria's did, their ship design sailed on for centuries inside the Roman navy itself, long after the Liburnians as an independent people were gone. 🏛️

We arent emotionally intelligent beings... we are animals that kill children with assumption that may turn out into something we fear so we rather eliminate than raise and teach.
We all failed. In fact animals are too good for us to call ourselves those. https://blossom.primal.net/4038acde48d613afd6d12da7cc630162d0ea3c4b7a6f40e0c87d8e6076e4dc08.jpg
