In a double blind procedure, 72 participants consumed an orange drink, which either contained caffeine (3.5mg per kilogram of body weight) or did not (placebo). After a 40-minute delay, participants read a counter-attitudinal message (antivoluntary euthanasia) endorsed by either a numerical majority or minority. Both direct (message issue, i.e., voluntary euthanasia) and indirect (message issue-related, i.e., abortion) change was assessed by attitude scales completed before and after exposure to the message. In the placebo condition, the findings replicated the predictions of Moscovici's (1980) conversion theory; namely, majorities leading to compliance (direct influence) and minorities leading to conversion (indirect influence). When participants had consumed caffeine, majorities not only led to more direct influence than in the placebo condition but also to indirect influence. Minorities, by contrast, had no impact on either level of influence. The results suggest that moderate levels of caffeine increase systematic processing of the message but the consequences of this vary for each source. When the source is a majority there was increased indirect influence while for a minority there was decreased indirect influence. The results show the need to understand how contextual factors can affect social influence processes.

i've been wanting out of the caffeine cycle practically since i first started drinking V energy drinks while working at a government office.

So, everyone knows caffeine makes you pee more and often, more smelly. But it also increases pain sensation. The effect gets more intense over about 2 days after but it's always there.

in my situation wit a big broken bone healing that's a really good reason to stop. After tomorrow, pain will hurt less. It also directly irritates bladder muscles similar to but not as intensely as nicotine.

just been having issues with flaky wifi at this place i'm staying at and a concurrent outage of mobile internet along with it... now i wannan one of these fat lithium battery boxes, a starlink mini, a 3 port failover i can run off the DC so i have mobile, whatever hardline exists if there is one where i am (as in when i'm set up somewhere) so i stay online reliably and usually over starlink unless the local hardline optic fibre is faster then it'll prefer that and mobile and starlink become backups.

yeah, to be honest, robots specifically are not interesting to me. well, or more to the point, it is not widely understood that a lot of "thinking" that computes for physical motion happens right nearby the joints and muscles doing the motion. the reason is latency, and the compute is small, and distributed. most robot control systems have a central brain that controls everything, and especially for military use cases, or just generally, this means that wherever that brain is, and all the wires connected to it, are a kill switch. where little computers all across the body keep working so long as the properly designed power distribution works. or in other words, distributing the batteries as well as the brains would make the robot more: resilient to damage, faster at reacting to stimuli, and more able to recover when something bad happens.

but i would call this something well beyond my intended scope, even if it demonstrates the same principles of small, distributed, semantic aware computing. maybe in the future. it's just out of scope for the initial work, which is aimed at computers that keep running for 100 years.

yeah, i have the same thoughts and i have the beginnings of a possible edge-AI system (it can already do translation) and i also want to build a physical computer, and the computer will be able to teach you how to do everything required to build the computer. from minerals and raw materials, including how to fabricate every thing required to do it. plus then, obviously the memory of the machine is copied over into the new hardware and voila.

Tbilisi is aight, as far as cities go. It's kinda like a manic version of Sofia with a lot of influx of money to half build touristy shit that everyone can see is just touristy shit (like the fake old-district they threw together next to the newly constructed georgian orthodox church up on the hill. Yeah it's pretty but it's fake. so, yeah that's how i rate Tibilisi - it has good bones but all the people that came for the nice 1 year visa brought a lot of money that has been wasted on turning the city into a tourist attraction.

Zugdidi, by contrast, is a little town in an ethnically separate area, Mingrelian, called "margaluri" in the language itself. It's one of the 4 "kartvelian" (southern caucasian, Kartveli is the georgian word for georgian). Mingrelian is different enough to not be mutually intelligible with the Georgian that is spoken in Tbilisi and Batumi. And because this variant of kartveli (georgian) is the ethnic first language of the region, Russian is widely spoken there so it's the language to know as it is for everywhere east of the western coast of the black sea. georgian is only useful in this tiny little country as it is. well, the young people speak georgian and english, the old people georgian and russian. it is advisable to start with english in any case. some folk, particularly the middle aged (hah, my own age group, even if i don't act or look like it) are likely to get cranky if i speak russian with them so i start with english. if they are clearly 60+ age group russian is likely to work better but because of the recent history from the post-USSR collapse war my generation, growing up at that time, are sensitive about russian.

ah the fun of post soviet world. anyway, just good stuff to know. if you ever get the urge to visit georgia, and i recommend georgia, particularly the black sea coast region, just stick with english, you'll find enough people who understand it well enough or have a friend who they might call up to translate or these days just point google translate at you with voice on to get it in georgian for them.

the russian language isn't a hot button in west asia though, in fact in my generation and older (so, 40+) almost everyone speaks fluent russian and english is harder and in a substantial part, even younger 20+ kids like northern kazakhstan don't even speak kazakh well. but kyrgyz is different. in kyrgyzstan almost everyone understands kyrgyz and russian perfectly, english is the hard one.

yeah, nostr needs a credible upgrade. one where a proper HD keychain enables revocation and doesn't put the master revocation key pubkey all over the place, just one signed revocation that once you publish it it advances your identity using an xpub and everyone can find it automatically because it's an xpub, but it's down stream of the HD path. that would fix that entire problem in one fell swoop. put bip-39 word key on the seed and it's a memorisable keylock and an extension or native app bunker style signer becomes viable. for native apps, that bunker can have localhost access, the web app path unfortunately that's complete bullshit and crap that you can't work around (the evryfing must be SSSLLL bullshit).

and the encoding for messages? json is total bullshit. it should use email style start of line sentinels (also, Go, Pascal Modula and Oberon style code block sentinels) and... well, these are my two gripes with nostr. aside from that, everything else about the protocol is awesome.

oh yeah, one more gripe. kind numbers. fuck that shit. it should be fully qualified path based identifiers. textnote. someprotocolname/someprotocolmessage. and so on.

yes, ok, those 3 things fixed and it's alright. everything else is just a matter of client and relay stuff. i mean, auth is required. you can have subscriptions that let you open protocol message tunnels already, that's what bunkers already are, they could be a path to location concealment with the use of nwc and keysend. running relays is trivial, there could be dozens if not hundreds of nostr relay hosting services that you can just throw a few dollars a month and badabing badaboom you have your own trustworthy or more trustworthy rendezvous points that get around the CGNAT cage of the modern "users can't run servers" dictum that is maintained mainly by fucking mobile phone company lobbies.
