A year ago this weekend, the sharpest part of the 10/10 sell-off hit Malaysia at 5:20am on a Saturday.

Roughly US$19B in leveraged positions liquidated in 24 hours. Bitcoin kept making blocks.

If you were sitting at a mamak in KL on Friday night, 10 October 2025, the sharpest part of the sell-off was still hours away. Around 11pm Malaysia time, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that a "massive increase" in tariffs on Chinese goods was being considered, and markets started to slide. Then at 4:50am on Saturday, while most of Malaysia was asleep, he announced an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports, scheduled to start on 1 November.

By Binance's own records, crypto prices bottomed between 21:20 and 21:21 UTC, about half an hour after that second post. Here, that was 5:20 on Saturday morning. Bitcoin had set a new all-time high above US$126,000 that Monday. That night it fell from about US$122,500 to under US$105,000.

CoinGecko, citing CoinGlass data, reported roughly US$19 billion in liquidations over 24 hours, affecting more than 1.6 million traders. That is the size of the positions closed, not the amount investors actually lost. It was reported at the time as the largest single-day liquidation event on record.

A year on, people are still arguing about who was to blame. That argument matters less than the lesson underneath it.

What actually broke that night

Leverage is borrowed exposure. At 10x, a 10% move against you would wipe out your whole stake, and in practice the platform closes the position before that, once your collateral drops below its minimum. Picture buying a RM500,000 condo in Cheras with RM50,000 of your own money, except the bank can sell it the moment your equity dips below its required margin, at five in the morning, without calling you first. That is the kind of automatic closure leveraged traders faced during the sell-off.

When all those forced sales landed at once, buyers stepped back and order books thinned out. Prices fell further, which triggered more liquidations, which pushed prices down again. Thin liquidity turned a bad headline into a cascade.

The platforms felt the strain too. Binance acknowledged heavy load and delays, and a few assets that users had posted as collateral briefly lost their pegs on its order books while trading near normal elsewhere. Binance said the crash came before the depeg and that its core systems stayed up. On 12 October it announced about US$283 million in compensation for users liquidated while holding those specific assets as collateral.

Whatever you think of that response, look at its shape. People whose collateral sat inside the platform depended on the platform's prices, the platform's systems, and the platform's decision about whom to make whole.

What didn't break

The Bitcoin network kept doing what it has done since 2009. Blocks kept coming, roughly every ten minutes, under the same rules. Nobody paused withdrawals at the protocol level, because there is nobody at the protocol level who can.

If you held Bitcoin in a wallet where you control the keys, and had not pledged it as collateral anywhere, the crash still cut its market value. But no exchange could margin-call those coins, force-sell them at 5am, mark them at a broken internal price, or freeze them pending review.

That protection comes with a job. Your keys and backups become your responsibility. A leaked recovery phrase can mean stolen coins, and if you lose your device and your backup together, there is no help desk to call. That trade-off is the whole point: control sits with you, along with the care it needs.

This is the part of Bitcoin we care about most at Bitcoin House Malaysia. Not the chart. The ability for an ordinary person, in Kuala Lumpur or Kuching or anywhere else, to hold savings without depending on a platform's systems or its decisions.

What this means for you in Malaysia

Most of us buy our first Bitcoin through an exchange, and that is a reasonable starting point. The Securities Commission keeps a public list of registered digital asset exchanges, and in December 2024 it ordered Bybit, an unregistered offshore platform, to shut off Malaysian access. Its warning is plain: on an unregistered platform, Malaysian securities law does not protect you.

But even a registered exchange is still a custodian. An exchange balance is closer to your Touch 'n Go eWallet than to cash in your pocket. Handy for moving money around, but the balance lives on someone else's server, under someone else's rules.

So start by knowing where your coins actually are. "On the exchange" and "in my wallet" are not the same sentence. Free, open-source phone wallets like BlueWallet or the Blockstream app (formerly Blockstream Green) are a good place to learn. Send a small amount first and practise receiving and sending. For larger, long-term savings, take the time to learn about hardware wallets before moving more.

Treat your recovery phrase like the geran for your house. Write it on paper, keep it somewhere safe, and use your wallet's built-in backup check before you add more funds. If you practise a full restore, do it only in the official app on a device you trust. Never screenshot it, never WhatsApp it to yourself, and never type it into a website, however official it looks.

And be honest about leverage. If you are putting aside part of your first salary, leverage is a tool that can turn a bad night into a final one. It has no place in a savings plan.
