New routstrd release!

Update with 'routstrd update'. Latest version: 0.4.17

With this version, you can use both "rout" or "routstrd" as your cli command. We agree, routstrd is hard to type 🥲

The AI space moves at lightning ⚡️ speed. Harnesses change how they work, and inference providers keep changing their caching behaviour and API formats. So stay current with the latest releases :).

What's new:
1. Mismatched model IDs are handled for you. If a node misconfigures one, the client handles it transparently via Nostr events (38426).

Nodes will inevitably advertise models under IDs nobody agreed on. Instead of those models missing your ranking algorithm, the client fetches mapping events from Nostr and takes care of it. So you get more upstreams and better prices.

2. TUI time filters and charts. The TUI now shows data filtered by time period, with charts.
3. Sandbox label for unverified nodes. Try nodes we haven't verified with 'routstrd providers enable sandbox'. Be careful though.
4. Vendor-specific APIs for Pi and OpenCode. Far better cache hit rates and more upstream coverage.
5. Better Lightning mint/melt recovery, with more wallet cleanup and recovery buttons and commands. Ask your agent to explore the wallet commands if you hit issues.
6. NWC refills are rock solid now. We lean on them more and more internally.
7. Reminder: cache hits are shown in the Recent tab. Found a bad upstream? Tag us and let us know :).
8. Per-model cooldowns. 'routstrd cooldowns' lists what's cooling down; 'routstrd cooldowns --reset' clears it.
9. Model bootstrap is 10x faster now, 150s (in some cases) to 10-15s.
10. Update notifications. While you're doing routine things — receive, balance, and friends routstrd will now tell you, for example:
`A new routstrd version is available (v0.4.16 → v0.4.17). Run 'routstrd update' to update.`

During recent discussions about the security of decentralized inference through routstr (nprofile…qeaf) people raised a valid concern: how can we be sure a provider doesn't read our prompts, or alter tool calls to backdoor the machine or the code it generates? Or how do we know the provider does not swap the model for a cheaper one and charge you full price? The usual answer is a TEE, a trusted execution environment. TEEs are hard to audit in practice. You trust the hardware vendor and re-verify a whole software stack after every update. We can do better, and now we do.

Routstr has a confidential mode. Your client talks TLS 1.3 directly to the upstream provider (Venice, for my node), and the Routstr node in between only relays encrypted records. Client and node compute the TLS keys together, so the node can add its API key without ever seeing your prompt or the answer, and it can't change a single byte of the response, tool calls included. Zero-knowledge proofs pin the model and the token cap, and you pay for the usage the provider itself reported. All of this rests on math and on the certificates you already trust, with no enclave or special hardware anywhere.

It works today on routstr.cypherpunk.today, through routstrd (I'm running opencode agents on it) and right in the browser, where the page does every check itself. It's new and experimental, so please try it and tell me what breaks.

If you're using normal models, yes, nodes can choose to log your requests and responses. But if you are using Tinfoil models, nobody can see your prompts, your requests are end to end encrypted to inside TEEs.

For normal models, redshift (npub1ftt…edsh) audits nodes based on web of trust and only those nodes are used right now. You can choose your own nodes you trust to not log your requests.

At all times, you are pseudonymous/anonymous if you always run in sandboxes.

hey, this is an issue on the node software only for the Kimi-K3 tinfoil model. Other tinfoil models seem to be working fine. This is mainly because of Tinfoil uses queuing for Kimi K3 requests and it takes longer than 30 seconds to respond and we have a timeout of 30 seconds.

Fix is underway! The tinfoil team got back to us regarding this yesterday.

1. 🔐 Encrypted secrets vault
Node secrets are no longer stored in plaintext config. They now live in an encrypted vault, so a leaked config file or database dump no longer means leaked keys.

3. 🛡 Database stability overhaul

- **More Accurate Cache Pricing:** Cached input tokens are now billed at their real, per-vendor rates across direct upstreams (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, and more) instead of a flat guess. Cache prices are configurable, so operators can tune them per model.

- **Reliable Mint Swaps:** Foreign-mint swaps now retry using the fees the mint actually charges instead of trusting a stale `fee_reserve`, and the NUT-02 input fee is deducted when crediting trusted-mint top-ups.

Another feature long in the making: TEE-based end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) models are now available through Routstr and our SDK, via the new Tinfoil integration. Your prompt is encrypted on your device and only decrypted inside a verified GPU confidential-computing enclave. Nobody in between, not even the Routstr node, can read it.

TEEs and Privacy

Running local models is getting easier and better, but is still very expensive if you want good models, especially for coding and other agentic tasks. And the only way to access such models in a privacy-preserving way is through confidential computing and Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs).

The good news: alongside CPU TEEs, we now have GPU TEEs in the latest GPUs (H100 and later). This lets us verify both the model running inside the GPU and the software running on the CPU, so that nothing can be logged between you and the GPU running the LLM.

A caveat worth noting: TEEs have been broken before, and they are not open source. This is not foolproof by any means but it is the best we have at the moment.

How It Works

The core idea: your request is encrypted before it leaves your machine, and the key only exists inside the TEE.

Attestation — When you connect, the Routstr SDK receives a remote-attestation proof from the TEE enclave. This cryptographically verifies that the code running inside the enclave is the genuine Tinfoil model image, on a real H100+ GPU, and hasn't been tampered with. Your client only proceeds if the proof is valid.

Client-side encryption — The routstr-sdk encrypts your request body locally using a key sealed to the attested enclave. The encrypted payload is what travels over the network.

In-enclave inference — Only the TEE can decrypt the request. The model runs entirely inside the confidential GPU. No host process, no node operator, no logging layer can see the plaintext prompt or the response.

Encrypted response — The TEE encrypts the response back to your key, which only your client holds. You decrypt locally.

So between you and the TEE + GPU, nobody can see any request or response. Routstr nodes only see encrypted ciphertext, even if they were intentionally logging.

Threat Model

This matters, so let's be precise about what TEE E2EE does and doesn't protect against.

What it protects: - The Routstr node operator cannot read your prompts or responses. - The hosting provider / data center cannot read them. - A network observer cannot read them.

What it doesn't fully protect: - A state actor with a backdoor to the TEE hardware/firmware could theoretically extract plaintext inside the enclave. TEEs have been broken before; this could happen again. We've come to trust Tinfoil more and more, but this is a trust assumption you should make consciously.

How Routstr adds anonymity on top of bare TEEs:

A TEE protects the contents of your prompts. But we already said TEEs have been broken before, so what happens if it happens again? Even if a state actor breaks the TEE and reads your plaintext prompts and responses, all they can do is try to build a profile of you. And that's exactly where Routstr makes it harder: with no persistent accounts and unlinkable Cashu payments, there's no stable identity to attach usage to. The anonymity layer is defense-in-depth, it limits the damage even in the worst-case TEE break. - With routstrd: API keys are periodically refunded with a node, so usage doesn't accumulate under one persistent balance. Refunding right after a session makes it even harder to link usage back to you. - With the chat app: Every request is a new XCashu payment — you pay only for that request. No accounts, pay-per-request/session, and Cashu-unlinkable payments.

That platform isn't well maintained actually, it has also been unlinked on our website. I highly recommend using Routstrd with Hermes. It has auto topup built on NWC and it also uses a local cashu wallet. :)

It's been almost 1 year 1 month since the birth of Routstr, these 13 months have been the most fulfilling months of our lives. Soon it'll be a year since Jack tweeted about us. Against all odds, we've kept on building what we think should exist in the ecosystem in the exact form we desperately desire for it to exist.

The Temptations

In the last one year, we've been approached by VCs a couple of times to invest in us, we've been told to take VC funding by some, and we've also talked about it internally, to us it wasn't even a question, funding of any kind creates problems.

We have also had many internal debates on - whether to register ourselves a company, - focus on building MOATS, - push api.routstr.com as the main node so that we could take a cut, - offer a subscription model as some people don't want to pay per request, - build an evaluation service just so we can have people being depended on us (not against the idea, but the intention) - and more.

We've resisted these pressures because we know short-term incentives would compromise long-term resilience. We've stuck to our principles, but it hasn't been free.

Independence

Our intention was never to NOT earn Bitcoin. We are truly grateful for HRF for supporting us when we needed it the most. Grants help us push through the uncertainty phase. But relying on grants forever doesn't seem like the right approach. If we learn to feed ourselves, grants can fund more teams through the phases of uncertainty. Plus, we believe that we cannot build a system that'll survive us if we relied on external grants forever.

So we've decided that the only way to get paid for our effort while staying true to our principles is to add a default dev cut to Routstr nodes. It's not a brand new approach, many protocols already do this, Robosats, Shopstr, etc. being some of the prominent ones. Unlike grants, this scales with actual usage. If the protocol is valuable, the default dev cut should sustain the effort that goes into maintaining the protocol.

What This Means For You

We believe it aligns our incentives better. If you don't want to pay the devs, you can turn it off by modifying the code or asking your agent to do so. We appreciate every node that contributes back, but the choice is entirely yours. Just... don't be that guy. You know what we mean. There's no enforcement.

Here's how it works: the cut is 2.1% of per-request revenue, sent periodically from your node's Cashu wallet to the Routstr dev Lightning address. End users simply see a price for the model they want. Nothing changes on their end. Revenue is openly posted on Nostr, and we'll publicly share what we receive from each contributing node.

If you want to continue running a Routstr node while not paying us, you can choose not to upgrade to version 0.4.3. Newer clients will target features and protocol improvements introduced in 0.4.x, so staying on older versions may mean missing out on compatibility improvements.

You can also fork from 0.4.2 and build your own Routstr node that follows the standard! We encourage competition, our ultimate goal is to have a system like Routstr in the wild, whether we build it or not.

We hope most Routstr nodes choose to keep the dev cut active. At just 2.1%, it is a small way to keep the protocol independent of grants and fund continued work on clients, standards, and tooling that ultimately brings more users and revenue to your node. Our incentives are aligned.

The node now shows the running commit when it isn't aligned with
the latest release tag — easy to spot when an operator is on an
in-between build vs. a clean release.

6. All-in-One Docker Image:
New official image `9qeklajc/routstr` on Docker Hub bundles the
FastAPI backend and the prebuilt Next.js admin UI in a single
~400 MB multi-arch (amd64 + arm64) container. One `docker run`
gives you API + admin dashboard.

One of the best examples is Routstr, an open-source decentralized marketplace for AI inference.
