The thumbnail isn't passed through to other servers in the ActivityPub payload (similar to preview cards).

Each receiving platform handles this situation differently. Some regenerate a thumbnail (processing again). Some ignore it and don't show one. Others create blank thumbnails to appease the Mastodon API.

A blurhash is passed, tho, and could be used as a placeholder.

#FediDev #Mastodon 2024-06-17T01:00:14Z https://njump.cloud.vinney.xyz/nevent1qqsgwws70w87w29yp29drea2egnqs6sje32t9uwe0lfrpm62e76sraszyz3fns6yusxulupkwelglndes4dgy2flvgvr6wynqe62h2tph3pmy8hhvqr Ghost will be using the open source Fedify server framework to manage the activitypub bits and pieces of their service.

https://activitypub.ghost.org/day-4/?ref=build-log-newsletter

#FediDev #ActivityPub #Fedify #Ghost 2024-06-15T20:46:05Z https://njump.cloud.vinney.xyz/nevent1qqsxs0zwwrv70e0pvt2uauz4uvaqxdde3za0zdaz2z5st7n3e8w5gkszyz3fns6yusxulupkwelglndes4dgy2flvgvr6wynqe62h2tph3pmyns3kt2 In reply to nevent1q…m2d0
_________________________

😱Quite the story. 2024-06-12T23:35:16Z https://njump.cloud.vinney.xyz/nevent1qqsve8k0jqt0uf5qgl99wcx00pz5us3pq52fmj2zenlx280530txu3szyz3fns6yusxulupkwelglndes4dgy2flvgvr6wynqe62h2tph3pmygnhswz In reply to nevent1q…2uhh
_________________________

Congratulations! I think a future challenge, as more diverse federated platforms become popular, will be figuring out better ways to display content in your feed based on it's origin.

An example - this thread (with some very long posts) is readable in my Mastodon timeline, but definitely easier to read in a discussion oriented format like Discourse.

On Mastodon:

https://mastodon.social/@pfefferle@socialhub.activitypub.rocks/112415946608955915

On Discourse:

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/topics-in-the-threadiverse/4225/1 2024-05-13T15:05:58Z https://njump.cloud.vinney.xyz/nevent1qqsvusu7k3da77sgjn2ryda2ufk4layuh4f96lvpg5snmhpsx3ka2aczyz3fns6yusxulupkwelglndes4dgy2flvgvr6wynqe62h2tph3pmyjuv524 With big players like Flipboard, Wordpress, Ghost and Threads entering the fediverse, along with bridges to Bluesky and more….your choice of platform will be less about content (you’ll see it everywhere!) and more about the app experience and features you prefer. 🥳

#Fediverse #FediApps 2024-05-05T02:33:53Z
