Lately I have been spending more time on the text based game side.

I added more games and reorganized them into categories. Some were ideas I built myself. Some were inspired by similar terminal games I found on GitHub and tried to recreate in my own way. I am also working on improving the ASCII and ANSI presentation so they feel more like real BBS door games instead of simple terminal scripts.

Now I could use some help from people who know this space better.
Do you know any good ASCII or ANSI game ideas that would fit a BBS? Have you built anything like this yourself? I would also be interested in old door games that might be worth recreating or taking inspiration from.

Suggestions are very welcome. 😀

#bbs #doorgames #ascii #ansi #retrocomputing #linux #antix #buildinpublic #asknostr

If a client gives the impression that something has been fully deleted when it may still exist on other relays then that can easily mislead users. I think clients should be very clear about what “delete” actually means on Nostr and whether it is only a local action or a deletion request that other relays may or may not honor.

I have the same problem. Sometimes I see certain replies on Nostrich. Some appear on Nostria. Others only show up on Primal or YakiHonne. After a while it gets confusing because you stop knowing which app you need to check to see the whole conversation. I think new users will notice this very quickly too. They will not think about relay differences. They will just wonder why one app shows something and another one does not. And I agree about languages too. If global posts could be filtered or translated into languages I understand that would make discovery much better.

I think some of the work around new relays and filtering is trying to improve that side of Nostr. But I think there is another problem that matters just as much. Nostr needs to feel consistent across clients. If I post something on Nostrich I should be able to open Primal or Nostr.app or Ditto and see the same post there. If I delete a comment I should expect it to disappear everywhere instead of wondering which relay or client still has it. Most new users will not care why a relay did not receive an event or why a deletion request was ignored. They will simply think the app is broken. I also do not think most people will join because we tell them Nostr is decentralized. They need a reason to stay. I would make Nostr almost invisible at first. Let people find communities around things they already enjoy. Make onboarding and key backup simple. Let them discover relays and Lightning later. The bold idea for me is to stop selling Nostr as a protocol and start building things people would want even if they had never heard the word Nostr before. Then make the experience between clients reliable enough that they do not need to understand the protocol just to use it.

The BBS itself is one thing but the same netbook and network are also used for other projects. So I am trying to avoid turning it into an easy target just by forwarding a port.

I have been researching what I can build on Linux lately. Most of the usual ideas keep coming up again and again so I am starting to think I should just build something a little crazy instead :D One idea I like is turning an old Linux machine into a small offline internet node with things like local websites a Nostr relay Kiwix file sharing and maybe even voice chat. Has anyone here seen the recent Vinicius Junior lookalike theory? I came across it and now I am strangely curious about how this whole thing started. Some posts claim that he disappeared after the World Cup and was replaced by a double because his appearance changed. From what I can find there is no evidence for that and reports say he had a cosmetic procedure during his holiday. Still I am really curious about how this theory spread so quickly. Did anyone follow this from the beginning? Where did it actually start?

#football #viniciusjr #asknostr

Figuring out the country from a photo alone would be very hard and I do not have a database that could reliably do that. That is also why I said the project has been sitting on the shelf for a while. I was not sure there would be enough interest to justify building all of the infrastructure around it. The signed ID idea is interesting though because that could make the record survive even if the app itself disappears.

The exact find location does not need to be public in full detail but at least the country and general area are important. Jasper for example is found all over the world. If we do not know where a specimen came from then organizing or comparing its information becomes much harder. One idea could be to give every stone its own unique ID. For example stone ID 1. Anyone who searches that ID could see where it was found and when it was found and its photos and characteristics and who currently holds it. If it is traded then the same ID continues with the stone and its history does not disappear.

I keep trying to find small jobs that actually justify turning it on

What is one old piece of hardware you still refuse to throw away? I have an old Daewoo computer that still boots from an MS DOS floppy disk. I also have an Atom N455 netbook with 2 GB RAM and somehow that one is still alive too. I installed antiX on the netbook and now I keep finding small things to make it useful again. Old hardware is weird like that. Sometimes it becomes more fun after everyone else has already decided it is useless. 😀

What old machine are you still keeping alive?

#linux #oldhardware #retrotech #selfhosting #asknostr

That is actually very close to what I had in mind. A distributed system where people contribute some of their own computer power to a shared AI workload. Your point about heat is interesting too. A data center produces a huge amount of heat and most people never get any direct benefit from it. If my own PC is doing useful AI work and also warming my room then at least part of that energy is doing two jobs. The difficult part is probably how to distribute the workload efficiently between thousands of different computers. But the idea still feels worth exploring.

Could AI run more like a peer to peer network? I was reading about how much electricity and hardware modern AI systems need and this question came to mind. Instead of everything running inside huge data centers could the people using the AI also contribute a small amount of CPU or GPU power from their own computers? You use the AI and at the same time your machine gives a little computing power back to the network. Other users do the same. Maybe the model or parts of the workload could be distributed between many machines. I know there are huge problems to solve. Privacy. Security. Different hardware. Slow computers. Bad actors. Model size. But I still find the idea interesting. Could this actually reduce the cost and energy required to run AI? Or would we simply move the same problem from data centers to millions of personal computers? Has anyone here experimented with distributed AI or decentralized computing before?

#asknostr #ai #decentralized #p2p #distributedcomputing #opensource

If a deletion event for my reaction exists on any relay then the client should reconcile that state and stop showing the old reaction. The relay can stay dumb. The client should be smart enough to understand the newer state. That is exactly why this feels more like a client side bug than something the user should have to understand. “Dumb servers. Smart clients.” fits this case really well.

Today I learned something new about Nostr reactions. It started with what I thought was a small Nostrich bug. I liked a note and removed the reaction. Then I liked it again. After repeating this a few times Nostrich showed several reactions from my own account. Some disappeared later but a few remained. At first I thought this was only a client problem. Then people explained what was actually happening. A reaction is a kind 7 event. Removing it creates a kind 5 deletion event. The problem is that not every relay honors that deletion. So the old reaction can come back when the client queries another relay. One suggestion I really liked was for the client to fetch my own kind 5 events together with my reactions. If one of my reactions has a matching newer deletion then the client can simply stop showing it even if a relay keeps serving the old event. That feels much closer to what a normal user expects when pressing unlike. I started with a strange reaction counter and somehow ended up learning more about NIP 09 and event deletion. Another small Nostr rabbit hole. 😃 I think this kind of thing matters if Nostr wants more normal users in the future. People will expect deleting a comment or removing a reaction to actually work. They will not care which relay ignored which event.

What do you think? Should clients handle this locally when relays do not honor deletion events?

#nostr #nostrdev #nip09 #buildinpublic #relay #nostrich

If I understand it correctly the client does not need to trust every relay to honor NIP 09. It can fetch my own kind 5 deletion events together with my kind 7 reactions and locally ignore any reaction whose event id is referenced by a newer deletion. That sounds like it would solve exactly what I saw in Nostrich. The relay may still serve the old reaction but the client already knows that I deleted it and does not have to show it again. I also like that this only needs to be trusted for my own events. I think this is worth testing against the relays that kept bringing the reaction back. I might even log which relays honor the deletion and which ones keep serving the old event. Thanks for giving a concrete implementation instead of only explaining why the problem happens.

I could log which relays receive the kind 5 deletion and then check which ones continue serving the original kind 7 reaction afterward. That would make the problem much easier to see instead of just watching the reaction count change in the client. Maybe this is something worth turning into a small relay test tool too. Nostr keeps giving me new rabbit holes 🙂

If the user removes a reaction and some relays keep serving the original event back then the interface can end up showing something completely different from what the user thinks they did. A new user will not know what kind 5 means or which relay ignored it. They will just see that they removed a like and somehow it came back. If Nostr is going to reach more people then this kind of behavior needs a real solution at the ecosystem level. Not an explanation every time it happens.

I do not think this should be something the client has to explain away forever. A real solution needs to exist. If Nostr grows and more people start using it they will naturally expect the same basic behavior they already know from other social networks. Delete a comment. Remove a like. Undo an action. Change your mind. Those things need to feel reliable. Otherwise new users will not think about relay behavior or protocol limitations. They will simply think the app is broken. I understand the technical reason now. But long term I think this is something the ecosystem has to solve rather than expect every new user to learn why it cannot work properly.

I repeated this 5 times and at one point Nostrich showed 5 reactions from my own account. After a while 3 of them disappeared and 2 reactions remained. I added screenshots because it was funny to watch the number grow while I was testing it. 😀 It looks like there may be a delay or an issue when reaction events are removed or refreshed from the relays.

Has anyone else noticed this?

#nostr #nostrich #bug #nostrdev #buildinpublic #asknostr

I ran into two small issues while playing with it though. If I click a country, close the attack panel, and then click the same country again, the panel doesn't reopen. Also, when I open some of the attack links that point to archive.is, I get the "One more step – Please complete the security check to access archive.is" page instead of the archived article. That one may just be archive.is doing its security checks rather than an issue with the dashboard itself. Other than that, I like the map approach a lot. It makes the geographic distribution of these attacks much easier to explore.

The word lottery is just a nickname because the chance of this tiny miner finding a Bitcoin block is extremely low. It is simply doing SHA256 work and trying to find a valid block. If it ever finds one the result can be verified by the Bitcoin network itself. So no ZK SNARK lottery system is involved here 😄

The mild mindreading part also made me curious though. Especially the part where it only works with people who have it too

That is why I keep saying I am still at the entrance of the rabbit hole. To really understand the things you mentioned I need much more knowledge and hands on experience first. Right now I do not have enough background to go that deep without getting completely lost. So I am trying to learn layer by layer. First I want to understand the basics well enough to actually use them and build small things. Then I can go deeper into topics like Tor integration and network topology. Otherwise I know myself. I will jump ten levels ahead and get lost somewhere in the tunnel 😂

Rabbit hole 😄 Monero is definitely a bottomless rabbit hole for me. I feel like I have only stepped through the entrance so far. There is so much going on under the surface that I could probably spend months exploring it and still only understand a small part. One thing I managed to understand well enough was RandomX. That led me to build a small RandomX Mining Manager. My CPU is not really powerful enough to make RandomX mining practical. But making money from mining was never the goal anyway. I started with a much simpler question. Can I learn enough about Monero to actually build something around it? In the end I managed to build a small working project and that already felt like progress to me. So I am definitely not done with Monero. FCMP++ is another thing I want to understand better when I go deeper. Your finance suggestion is interesting too. That might actually be another rabbit hole worth adding to my list. I am looking for exactly this kind of thing. Something where learning can eventually turn into building something real.

İngilizce adıyla My First Amazing World Explorer.
Denemek isteyenler:
https://mundoryhunt.skylordslab.com/
Rehber için:
https://mundoryhunt.skylordslab.com/rehber/
#nostrorgtr #nostrturkiye #mundory #mundoryhunt #buildinpublic #gamedev #webgame #retrogaming

I know the chance of finding a Bitcoin block with it is almost impossible. That is part of the fun though. It is basically a tiny lottery ticket that never stops trying. Maybe nothing will ever happen. Maybe one day I will look at it and see BLOCK FOUND. 😂 And if that day ever comes I hope I can send 1 million sats to the people here who followed the journey and left comments along the way. Until then this little machine can keep hashing and keeping the dream alive. What do you think.

Should I leave it running forever? 😄

#bitcoin #mining #solomining #btc #lotteryminer #nostr

We have also been trying to build a small Turkish Nostr community around https://nostr.org.tr/ and most of the work there has been driven by Emre and a few people helping around it. We currently have a Turkish read and write relay at wss://relay.nostr.org.tr/ and a media server at https://media.nostr.org.tr/ for image sharing. Would you consider supporting these in some way inside nostr-proto.org? Maybe as optional infrastructure for Turkish users or as part of a future local community setup. I know your forum itself is built around NIP 29 groups on your own relay so I am not suggesting replacing that. I am just curious whether local relays and media servers like ours could have a place around the forum. I think it could be useful for connecting smaller language communities to a larger Nostr space.
