Celebrating #FungiFriday with officially the teeniest mushroom I've photographed; I'm still pretty new to real macro photography and it's proven to be quite the challenge, particularly on film, but wow is it satisfying when the effort pays off!

Another friend from my walk yesterday evening; this black rat snake is by far the largest snake I've ever seen in the wild!

sidenote: what's the deal with rat snake taxonomy? I have no clue what the proper latin name is for this guy because the whole genus is kinda a mess and there seems to be some disagreement on how many species there even are. IDing this snake turned into quite the Wikipedia rabbithole last night lol

Didn't find quite as many cool fungi as I was hoping for this weekend, but there was still plenty to see! Here's a nice one which I believe is a gilled polypore (Trametes betulina); I collected a bit of this specimen to put under the microscope so hopefully in the next couple days I'll have a chance to get some pics and confirm the species

A quick post for #FungiFriday and #FilmFriday featuring: a minor camera malfunction!

(been having some issues where the shutter on the new Minolta gets randomly stuck open for like 10+ seconds, and it seems when that happens some light manages to leak into adjacent frames. Luckily it's not too bad on this one, and for a couple shots it actually gave a pretty cool aesthetic)

Celebrating #ThickTrunkTuesday with this large American elm (Ulmus Americana). These trees have had an important role in our ecosystems and culture here in North America for centuries, but are now considered endangered due primarily to the impact of Dutch elm disease--an infection caused by several invasive fungi of the genus Ophiostoma. Despite this, it's still not too hard to find healthy trees both in cultivation and the wild, so if you find yourself standing beneath one's long, arching branches, take a moment to appreciate all the elms in your life.

In observance of #FungiFriday I bestow upon you this delightfully wiggly jelly fungus; may it bring you as much joy as it has brought me :3

I'm pretty sure this is either Exidia crenata or Exidia recisa, but I don't know how to tell them apart lol

I come bearing the mushroom pics promised earlier, along with a little microscopy :3

I honestly can't even believe how many spores this one mushroom produced, especially with how pure white the gills were when I collected it; had to scrape off a tiny piece from the spore print slides and dilute it with a bit of water to get a decent view of them under the microscope.

I believe that these are deer mushrooms (Pluteus cervinus), although I'm not 100% on the species. Definitely at least confident that these are in the genus Pluteus though.

More microscopic mushroom bits incoming in the replies!
