The apparently &#34;correct&#39; number may come from a study which is fudged, or the dataset wholesale fabricated, and there is no reason to assume that the number which appears correct to you or to me does not fall prey to that. You can&#39;t even tell whether an author of a study or statistic realizes that they may be fudging the numbers, because the inaccuracy or blindspot may be ideological or perceptually-based, so it&#39;s not solved by attempting to judge motives either.
